“We lose more than 17 veterans a day to suicide. That’s not just a number—it’s a national emergency.”

In a powerful move to combat the veteran suicide crisis, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced $52.5 million in new grants to support community-based suicide prevention efforts. This is more than funding—it’s hope.

💔 The Reality We Can’t Ignore

According to the VA’s 2024 report, 6,407 veterans died by suicide in 2022. That’s nearly 18 lives lost every single day—heroes who survived war but couldn’t survive the silence that followed.

Since 2001, over 140,000 service members have died by suicide. The risk is especially high for young veterans aged 18–34, whose suicide rate has more than doubled. And the most dangerous time? The first three months after leaving the military.

💡 What’s Being Done

The VA’s Staff Sgt. Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program is stepping up. Here’s what you need to know:

  • $52.5 million in funding is now available.
  • Grants of up to $750,000 are open to community-based organizations.
  • Applications are due by July 18, 2025.
  • Recipients will be announced by September 30.

Since its launch in 2022, the Fox Grant Program has already awarded $157 million to nearly 100 organizations across 43 states, U.S. territories, and tribal lands.

“Reducing Veteran suicide starts with reaching Veterans when and how it’s most convenient for them.”
— VA Secretary Doug Collins

🛠️ More Than Just Grants

This announcement is part of a broader push by the VA to improve care and access:

  • Veterans no longer need a second VA doctor’s approval to access non-VA care.
  • Survivors and dependents now benefit from a “White-Glove” Survivor Outreach Team and a more automated benefits system.
